Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Here are the stages of gum disease:

  • Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease and is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is reversible with proper oral hygiene.
  • Periodontitis: If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis. At this stage, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that can become infected.
  • Advanced Periodontitis: In the final stage of gum disease, the bone and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed, which can cause the teeth to become loose and fall out.

The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene, including brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
